  1. Play It Again, Sam.
Definitely, a great song - and a great movie. I'm often surprised so many people know the quote, but have never seen it. I found it interesting on Wikipedia, that the "Play it again, Sam" is actually a misquote...

Six lines from Casablanca appeared in the AFI top 100, by far the most of any film... The others were: "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."(20th), "Play it, Sam. Play 'As Time Goes By.'" (28th), "Round up the usual suspects." (32nd), "We'll always have Paris." (43rd), and "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine." (67th).

Was the song written for the movie?

  2. you know jamie, i would imagine that the song predated the film. this isn't my research talking now, but most of the films back then that i know of featured songs that were already popular. i imagine there are some exceptions. it's a great question and it deserves a better answer than i can give off the cuff.
